Marty Pasetta, best known for directing the Academy Awards telecast annually from 1972 to 1988, died Thursday night. He was 82.

Pasetta was struck by a car he had just exited in La Quinta, Calif. in Riverside County, The Desert Sun reported. He died at the scene, police said.

The driver, identified as Keith Stewart, 75, of La Quinta, stopped his vehicle to drop off Pasetta and another passenger, according to the sheriff’s department. Stewart then went to exit his vehicle, but accidentally left the car’s transmission engaged, causing him to crash into his passengers.

He also directed “Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii,” which aired on Jan. 14, 1973, in more than 40 countries. The concert special, featuring Elvis Presley at the Honolulu International Center, remains one of the most watched TV programs in history.

An 82-year-old man died after a vehicle driven by a suspected drunken driver struck two people Thursday night in La Quinta.

The driver, identified as Keith Stewart of La Quinta, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Police and firefighters responded to the 49-700 block of Via Conquistador just before 9:30 p.m., where they found two people laying on the ground.

Stewart, 75, had stopped his vehicle on Via Conquistador to drop two passengers off, according to the sheriff's department. He then went to exit his vehicle but left the car's transmission engaged, causing him to crash into his passengers, who at that point had already exited the vehicle.

Marty Pasetta, 82 of La Quinta, died at the scene while the other passenger was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with major injuries, police said.

Pasetta was a significant television director and producer from 1967, when he directed "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," to 1991, when he directed and produced "The Movie Awards," a TV ceremony hosted by Kirstie Alley. He directed many telecasts of the Academy, Emmy and Grammy awards, plus numerous television specials in the United States and Europe.

Pasetta most notably directed Elvis Presley's 1973 Aloha from Hawaii concert, but he also directed "The Beach Boys: 25 Years Together," "Paul Anka: Music My Way" and "Bing Crosby and His Friends." He directed AFI Lifetime Achievement Award specials for Fred Astaire, Alfred Hitchcock and Frank Capra, among others.

He directed and produced America's All-Star Tribute to Elizabeth Taylor in 1989 at the McCallum Theatre as the second major fundraiser for the McCallum. It was hosted by Bob Hope, who was the first recipient of the award named after Hope at a black-tie gala that launched the McCallum in 1988.

Stewart was treated for minor injuries and was later booked into the Riverside County jail in Indio.

Pasetta is the 10th pedestrian to be killed after being hit by a car this year. Just six days ago, 51-year-old Fred BamBusch of Desert Hot Springs was killed while crossing Palm Drive in his wheelchair just after 8 p.m. The driver of the car that hit him stopped and cooperated fully with police.
