Shows da FTD o que temos e o que ainda podemos esperar

Mensagempor Sergio Biston » Dom Jul 09, 2017 11:37 pm

I have listed the live shows from 1969 to 1977 issued on the FTD label. The idea is to give fans an overview of what has been covered and what remains to be dealt with. The list is a bit crude, and it's crafted from memory alone, so I apologize for any mistakes or shortcomings.

1969
Las Vegas, Season 1, July/August:
August 3, dinner show (the date is an educated guess, available on The Return to Vegas)
August 22, dinner show (Elvis in Person)
August 23, midnight show (Elvis at the International)
August 25, midnight show (Hot August Night)
August 26, dinner show (Elvis Live in Vegas)
August 26, midnight show (All Shook Up)

In addition, two concerts are available on the main label (August 21 MS and August 24 DS). There are four unreleased multi-track shows left in the vaults. Do we need them? No, not really; the season has been covered in abundance. Do we want them? Hell yeah! The best solution is to release a 12-CD box set on the main label with all the live shows in time for Elvis Week 2019.

1970
Las Vegas, Season 2, January/February:
January 26, opening show (The On Stage Season, disc 1)
February 15, midnight show (Polk Salad Annie)
February 18, midnight show (On Stage, disc 1)
February 19, midnight show (On Stage, disc 2)
February 23, closing show (The On Stage Season, disc 2)

What remains in the vaults: February 16, dinner and midnight; February 17, dinner and midnight; February 19, dinner show. Although none of the shows were recorded in their entirety, they are stellar performances captured in glorious multi-track sound and deserve to be heard by the loyal FTD fanbase.

Houston Astrodome, February/March: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

Las Vegas, Season 3, August/September:
August 10, stage rehearsal (badly edited, aka raped, on Stage Rehearsal)
August 10, opening show (One Night in Vegas)
August 13, dinner show (The Wonder of You)

The six professionally recorded shows are all available on the main label. However, we still need some complete rehearsals from July/August to fill in the gaps.

Tour 1, September: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

Tour 2, November:
November 11 (Taking Care of Business – In a Flash)

1971
Las Vegas, Season 4, January/February:
January 28, dinner show (The Impossible Dream)

We absolutely need one more release from this season. Shows available on soundboard in the vaults: January 26 OS, January 27 DS and MS, January 28 MS, January 29 DS, February 23 CS. Only a few songs have survived from the opening show due to a badly twisted cassette tape. Not sure about the quality of the unheard January 27 DS. A 2-CD set offering three concerts would be the way to go here: CD 1: January 27 DS if undamaged, or January 28 MS, plus the first half of the incomplete January 27 MS; CD 2: Second half of January 27 MS plus either January 29 DS or February 23 CS.

Lake Tahoe, Season 1, July/August: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

Las Vegas, Season 5, August/September: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

Tour 3, November:
November 10 (Elvis as Recorded at Boston Garden ’71)

1972
Las Vegas, Season 6, January/February:
February 15, midnight show (An American Trilogy)

As far as I understand it, a total of eight shows were recorded on multi-track, albeit in part only, starting with the February 14 DS and ending with the February 17 MS. “An American Trilogy” from February 15 MS was released on Elvis Aron Presley, but not, absurdly, on the above mentioned concert, despite being from that date. Instead, the producers saw fit to substitute it with the February 14 MS version, a decision that beggars belief.

Anyway, we need a 2-CD set on the FTD label that contains as many “complete” shows as possible (complete meaning everything that was recorded at each date). This will be a bestseller for sure. A lot of fans are waiting for such a title. I’m one of them. Also, it would be nice to get the complete January 26 OS on soundboard. We got several bonus tracks from that show on An American Trilogy.

Tour 4, April:
The April 18 show has been released on the main label, but so far, nothing on FTD. These recordings (four shows) are likely to find a home on a big box set on the main label next summer (2017), along with the March and April rehearsals.

Tour 5, June:
Only the two MSG shows were recorded professionally, but they are not likely for FTD release. No other quality recordings are known to exist officially.

Las Vegas, Season 7, August/September:
August 4, rehearsal (3000 South Paradise Road, disc 2)
August 11, dinner show (Summer Festival)
August 12, dinner show (3000 South Paradise Road, disc 2)
September 4, dinner show (Destination USA)

August 11 and 12 MS are in the vaults and should be released as a twofer. There’s a rumor that the September 4 closing show exists on soundboard and, if true, would make for a smashing twofer with the January 26 opening show on disc one.

Tour 6, November: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

1973
Aloha shows January 12 and 14 released on main label. Might get a rerelease on FTD with the complete post-Aloha recording session as a bonus.

Las Vegas, Season 8, January/February:
January 26, rehearsal (From Hawaii to Las Vegas)
February 3, midnight show (I’ll Remember You)

Midnight show February 2 and dinner show February 3 are in the vaults and should be issued as a twofer.

Tour 7, April: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

Lake Tahoe, Season 2, May:
May 13, 3 AM show (Takin’ Tahoe Tonight!)

Several soundboards exist in the official vaults. We desperately need another Tahoe 1973 offering, even if it’s just a single disc.

June/July, Tour 8: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

Las Vegas, Season 9, August/September:
September 3, closing show (Closing Night)

If there are quality tapes in the vaults, we should absolutely get another release from this season.

1974
Las Vegas, Season 10, January/February:
January 27, opening show (I Found My Thrill)

There are a few soundboards in the official vaults, plus some excellent audience recordings. Another offering from this season would be most welcome.

Tour 9, March:
March 1 (Sold Out! disc 1)
March 17, evening show (Hometown Shows, disc 1)
March 18 (48 Hours to Memphis)
March 20 (Elvis Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis)

Most of the tour was captured on soundboard, plus at least two shows on multi-track. The two Houston Astrodome shows, where Elvis performed without an orchestra, are of particular interest. Although the tour has been properly covered, it ranks among one of the best of the seventies (top nine).

Tour 10, May:
May 11, evening show (Live in LA)

There is at least one more soundboard in the vaults, possibly three more. Another release would be welcome, especially since the LA show runs too slow, making Elvis sound sluggish.

Lake Tahoe, Season 2, May:
May 21, midnight show (High Sierra)

There are many soundboards in the vaults, and we should get another dip or two. If they have the opening show, it would be great to combine it with the May 27 closing show that took place three in the morning.

Tour 11, June/July:
June 19 (Rockin’ across Texas, disc 1)
June 21 (Sold Out! disc 2)
July 1 (Fashion for a King, disc 1)

The shows from this tour are good but uneventful, and the quality of the soundboards are average. I see no reason to revisit this tour anytime soon, even though there are many more soundboards in the vaults.

Las Vegas, Season 11, August/September:
August 16, rehearsal (From Sunset to Las Vegas, unfortunately with one song edited out)
August 19, opening show (Nevada Nights, disc 1)
August 21, midnight show (Nevada Nights, disc 2)
August 24, midnight show (It’s Midnight!)

A fascinating Vegas season, captured in its entirety on soundboard, with the possible exception of two shows. Elvis was very talkative. We should get more shows from this season.

Tour 12, September/October:
October 1 (Dragonheart)

Many soundboards are in the vaults, and most of them will stay there. It was the first scandal tour. However, we should get another release. The shows are morbidly fascinating.

Lake Tahoe, Season 4, October: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

1975
Las Vegas, Season 12, March/April:
March 22, midnight show (Las Vegas 1975, disc 1)
March 28, midnight show (Big Boss Man)
April 1, dinner show (Las Vegas 1975, disc 2)

There are at least two more concerts available on soundboard in the vaults, and while I wouldn’t mind getting them as a twofer, they are in no way essential.

Tour 13, April/May:
April 27, evening show (Elvis in Florida)
May 6 (Dixieland Rocks)

A decent tour. Many soundboards sit in the vaults, several of which are pretty good. One more release would do the trick, I think, preferably one that combines the first and last show of the tour.

Tour 14, May/June:
May 31, afternoon show (Dixieland Delight, disc 1)
June 1, evening show (Dixieland Delight, disc 2)
June 7, evening show (Another Saturday Night)
June 10 (Hometown Shows, disc 2)

A reasonably good and enjoyable tour that has been well covered. No need to return to it, unless the label keeps going past 2020.

Tour 15, July: One soundboard is available. The ending is missing, but it would still be a most welcome and necessary release.

Las Vegas, Season 13, August: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

Las Vegas, Season 14, December:
December 13, dinner show (Dinner at Eight)
December 14 (Fashion for a King, disc 2)

A surprisingly solid season. There are still several soundboards in the vaults, and we should get treated to another visit or two.

New Year’s Eve from Pontiac: No quality tape exists in the official vaults, but I wouldn’t object to a good audience recording. It was a historic event, after all.

1976
Tour 16, March:
There are several soundboards in the vaults, and we will most certainly get a show or two from this short tour.

Tour 17, April:
April 22 (America)

There are a few more shows available on soundboard in the vaults, and we should probably get another one at some point, if only to make up for the atrocious mix on America. However, this is definitely not a priority, and it must not be done at the expense of a pre-1974 show.

Lake Tahoe, Season 5, April/May: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

Tour 18, May/June:
May 30, evening show (Elvis in West Texas)
June 1 (Tucson ’76)

More shows rest in the vaults, and there they should remain. There is no need to investigate this tour any further.

Tour 19, June/July:
July 3 (Rockin’ across Texas, disc 2)

A surprisingly good show, all things considered. There are many soundboards in the vaults. The July 5 gig from Memphis is worthy of release, simply because it was the last time Elvis performed in his hometown. The July 4 show, if available on soundboard, is another one that should be released, but only due to its historic value as the bicentennial show of the year. This is an ideal twofer (that requires editing the solos from Memphis a little bit so that the show fits on a single disc).

Tour 20, July/August:
July 30 (New Haven ’76)

There are a good number of soundboards in the vaults, but none are worth releasing.

Tour 21, August/September:
September 6, afternoon show (Elvis in Alabama, disc 1)
September 6, evening show (Elvis in Alabama, disc 2)

There are many soundboards still in the vaults, and they can safely rot there, unless the label should continue for another decade or so.

Tour 22, October:
October 14 (Chicago Stadium, disc 1)
October 15 (Chicago Stadium, disc 2)
October 17 (A Minnesota Moment)

A decent tour. Many soundboards are in the vaults. I wouldn’t object to another release years from now.

Tour 23, November:
November 29 (The West Coast Tour ’76, disc 1)
November 30 (The West Coast Tour ’76, disc 2)

Short but decent tour. There are at least two more soundboards in the vaults. Another release could be possible in the future, but I don’t see much sense in it.

Las Vegas, Season 15, December:
There’s at least one soundboard in the official vaults, possibly a few more, but the technical quality is problematic, and so it Elvis’s level of performance. Nevertheless, it’s the last season, and it should be dealt with in some way.

Tour 24, December:
December 28 (Showtime!, disc 1)
December 29 (Showtime!, disc 2)
December 31 (audience recording available on New Year’s Eve)

Great tour compared to the rest of the year. The December 27 show is supposed to be available on soundboard in the official vaults, and if so, we should get it.

1977
Tour 25, February:
February 20 (Unchained Melody)

Uneven tour, but at least Elvis tried to revamp his set list a little bit. It’s not the worst tour to revisit, but I don’t find it particularly necessary to do so, even though there are several soundboards in the vaults.

Tour 26, March:
March 24 (Amarillo ’77)

The entire tour was recorded on soundboard, but not a single show was captured in its entirety. Sometimes, only a few songs were recorded. This is hands down the worst tour Elvis embarked on. After all, he had to cancel the last four concerts, something that had never happened before on the road. We do not need a revisit on soundboard, but it would be great to get the professional recordings.

Tour 27, April/May:
The entire tour was recorded on soundboard, and it’s about time we get a show from this tour. Also, it would be great to collect the professional recordings from this tour and the previous one on a 2-CD set.

Tour 28, May/June: No quality tapes exist in the official vaults.

Tour 29, June:
Two concerts were recorded professionally. If they are not released on the main label in 2017, they should find a home on FTD, in addition to the solid audience recording that Ernst bought from a Dutch fan many moons ago (it sounds better than the bootlegs).
